Tips for Helping Your Community This Summer

If it's not made by nature, it doesn't belong in nature

Summer will be here before we know it! Between the pool parties, family barbecues, and trips to the beach, you may be looking to do more with your time by giving back and helping your community.

There are always people in your community that could benefit from your efforts. And, it may even be simpler and more fun than you think!

Looking for inspiration? Here are a few ideas on how to help your community this summer season:

Donate Your Clothing

Your lightly used, unwanted clothing may be exactly what someone else is looking for. Clean out your closets and dressers and gather any clothing items you don’t want or need anymore. Then, find a local thrift store or organization to donate them to, so they end up in the right hands.

Visit the Elderly

In every community, there are assisted living facilities and nursing homes where the elderly live and are taken care of. Unfortunately, many of these people don’t have family that can visit or check on them regularly. If you’re looking to make some people’s day, try visiting one of these local residences and spend the day meeting some great senior citizens. Whether it’s just a simple conversation, playing a board game, or enjoying a snack, they’ll be very appreciative.

Clean up a Public Space

If you’re looking to do something that takes little to no planning and will go a long way to protect your community, try picking up garbage and cleaning up a public space. Grab some gloves, trash, and recycling bins, and head to your local park, playground, hiking trail, or other outdoor area and carefully collect anything that doesn’t belong to be safely disposed of where it belongs. People enjoying those areas may be inspired to join you, too!

Donate Your Time or Money to Your Favorite Local Organizations

Do you have a favorite local organization that could use some help? Spend some of your extra time volunteering for causes you care about, or donate any spare money you have to help make a difference. Share with others why these organizations are important to you and show others how small steps can make a big impact when it comes to helping your community.

Are you looking to support a Long Island charitable organization? Consider donating your time or money to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been helping Long Islanders for more than 70 years in a multitude of ways; no work of charity is foreign to the society.

We provide financial and material assistance, along with emotional and spiritual comfort, to help people facing all sorts of challenges. Although affiliated with the Catholic Church, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul helps anyone in need regardless of their race, religion, age, or citizenship status.
