Fall in Love with the Society with your +1

Two by two is a familiar reference in Scripture from Noah’s Ark to Jesus’ sending forth the disciples. And, in the Home Visit, it is the signature activity of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul…Vincentians visit neighbors in need in pairs! So, as we approached February, the month where couples are celebrated, we thought about featuring some of our Vincentian pairs who serve together in this unique ministry. The goal of highlighting these testimonies…first and foremost, to invite other Long Islanders to join us in the many opportunities to make a difference in their communities.

Visit our social sites where our Vincentians will share their stories throughout the month of February!

For information on becoming a Vincentian, please call 516-822-3132

The three essential elements of the Society are spirituality, friendship and service. Bob and Denise share how each of those developed in them and then modeled for their children.

What better way to give of yourselves than to make a difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate by serving in the Society together like mother and son duo, Kathy and Stephen, who took their lead from her husband/his father, John. Stephen stated, "When my dad was in the hospital, he asked that I find ways to help those in need however possible...I chose SVDP Holy Spirit because I felt a connection to the community, but most importantly to continue to assist neighbors as he and my mom did for many years." Kathy echoed that sentiment, "It is nice to have my son at my side at meetings and the Friends of the Poor Walk. I imagine my husband is smiling down on the two of us as we continue his mission to help those in need."

Consuelo and Raul are grateful for their service together as it provides them with mutual support, "it is easier to serve when both are involved with the Society; always encouraging each other because sometimes you may be going through moments of discouragement, but if you have a partner who supports you and comforts you, it's less difficult." "es más fácil para servir cuando los dos estan invulucrados en la sociedad siempre animarse el uno al otro porque aveses puedes estar pasando por momentos de desánimo, pero si tienes una pareja que te apolle y te consuele es más difícil."

"Christ is not merely a means for a better relationship with your spouse, your spouse is a means for a better relationship with Christ." Ellen explained, "for other couples considering the ministry, it is important to remember that each Vincentian discerns and says yes to the calling at different times...I started in SVDP first, and remember my husband wondering why I was so involved? Once retired, Dennis did not waste any time attending...and the journey from asking why do you do it? To now I understand, has allowed us to serve together and has enriched our experiences and relationship. Blessings have been bestowed upon our marriage each day while caring for our neighbors in need."

SVDPLI's mission is “A network of friends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need.” Roger and Maryann have found that true, "In the busy world we live in, [the Society] gives us an opportunity to do something together for the good of others. Additionally, we have connected with wonderful people in our parish…the experience is incredibly rewarding but requires commitment and a shared dedication to the cause. Being actively involved as a couple benefits not only the community but also strengthens the bond between partners. It's a journey worth taking together."

In the prayer we open every SVDP Conference meeting with, we quote the Scripture passage, "when two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:20) Lolita describes how Scripture compels her and Oscar to be inspired in their ministry to do good works. She says, "What motivates me personally to practice something that is written in sacred Scriptures, specifically in Revelations 22:12, the Lord will compensate each one of us for our work or what we have done well."
