The Value of Listening with Empathy when having Tough Conversations in Home Visits

Statute 8 states that visits to the poor are made in a Vincentian Spirit (Rule, Part I, 1.7-1.12). Visits to those in need should be made in their environment. This contact with friends in need should always be made in a spirit of friendship, respect, cordiality, empathy and affection. It should also promote self-sufficiency whenever possible for those who suffer and show concern for their deepest needs. Services are provided regardless of race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, criminal justice status, disability, marital status, veteran status, national origin, age or physical handicap. Home visits always are made in pairs. (Rule, Part III, Statute 8)

How do we as Vincentians put this Statute into practice? What are the nuances of the Home Visit that we must consider and contend with? What happens if the dynamics of the Home Visit are more challenging than we expected?

In an effort to enhance the skills of our Vincentians, we are offering a Home Visit Formation Event entitled, “The Value of Listening with Empathy when having Tough Conversations in Home Visits” on Saturday, October 14th from 8:30am – 12:30pm in two locations: St. Thomas More Church at 115 Kings Highway, Hauppauge for English speakers and SVDPLI Annex at 259 Broadway, Bethpage for Spanish speakers. This formation event will be in person ONLY because of the dynamics of the presentation and will cover a variety of topics including financial assessment, mental health, and understanding poverty.

We know not all of our Vincentians participate in Home Visits, however, we hope all of our Conferences will have representatives at this important formation event. Thank you in advance.

Breakfast will be served.
