The Annunciation of the Lord
The Eternal King
…and of his Kingdom there will be no end.
Luke 1:33

The Feast of the Annunciation is always celebrated during the Lenten season. It seems a bit jarring, doesn’t it? We are in a penitential season, thinking about the Incarnate Son of God and his Passion and death. The birth and mission of the One who would die and rise from the dead were announced long ago to a maiden in Nazareth.

When the archangel Gabriel came to Mary and proclaimed this Good News, it signaled a new reign had arrived in the history of Israel. The miraculous conception of the Savior by the Holy Spirit would mean that the reign of sin would be over. It meant that the heavenly Kingdom would be opened. That’s what the Good Thief heard on Good Friday, “Today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43).

Mary’s fiat at the Annunciation ushered in the era of the eternal Kingdom. Jesus desires to make us citizens of that eternal Kingdom. All we must do is follow him and do his will, and hopefully, we will be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

La Anunciación del Señor
El Rey Eterno
…y su Reino no tendrá fin.
Lucas 1:33
La Fiesta de la Anunciación siempre se celebra durante la Cuaresma. Suena un poco chocante, ¿verdad? Estamos en tiempo de penitencia, pensando en el Hijo de Dios encarnado, su Pasión y muerte. El nacimiento y la misión de Aquel que moriría y resucitaría fueron anunciados hace mucho tiempo a una doncella de Nazaret.

Cuando el arcángel Gabriel se acercó a María y proclamó esta Buena Nueva, marcó la llegada de un nuevo reino en la historia de Israel. La concepción milagrosa del Salvador por obra del Espíritu Santo significaría el fin del reino del pecado. Significaba que se abriría el Reino celestial. Eso fue lo que escuchó el Buen Ladrón el Viernes Santo: «Hoy estarás conmigo en el Paraíso» (Lucas 23:43).

El mandato de María en la Anunciación inauguró la era del Reino eterno. Jesús desea hacernos ciudadanos de ese Reino eterno. Solo debemos seguirlo y hacer su voluntad, y con suerte, seremos dignos de las promesas de Cristo.
