A Hand-Up, Not a Hand-Out: Let’s Make a Lasting Impact

At the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Long Island, We Help People…by offering person-to-person services. SVDPLI reaches beyond the traditional scope of social services and into the hearts of those seeking aid by allowing people to confide their stories of struggle in the comfort of their own homes. We meet people where they are. We’ve found that embracing the humanity of Vincentians (our volunteers) and the neighbor in need provides the best platform for assistance and stability. We give those in need a “hand-up,” not a “hand-out.”

What Does “Giving a Hand-Up” Mean?

At its core, the phrase “giving a hand-up” reflects the difference between temporary relief and sustainable, long-term support. Offering a hand-up means, we help people regain their dignity, and independence. We work with individuals to identify sustainable solutions, empowering them to rise above their challenges.

Through person-to-person services, we help families meet their basic needs while guiding them toward self-sufficiency, whether it’s a family on the verge of losing their home or a single parent struggling to provide for their children.

How Your Support Makes a Difference

When you support SVDPLI, you help provide more than just a short-term solution. You are contributing to a system of support that focuses on long-lasting change. Your donation helps fund crucial services like home visits by our Vincentian volunteers, where we connect with families face-to-face, listen to their stories, and find out how to support them best. These home visits allow us to tailor our assistance to their unique circumstances, providing a compassionate and personalized approach.

A hand-up means equipping people with the necessary resources to build better lives, like helping a family access financial planning tools, job training, or keeping the lights on. It’s about breaking the cycle of poverty.

The Power of Community

We believe in the strength of community. Working together creates a ripple effect of change that extends beyond individuals to neighborhoods and entire communities. Your generosity can be the start of that ripple. You can be part of the solution, helping people not just survive but thrive.

Every donation is a step toward lifting someone up. It’s a step toward offering them hope, opportunity, and a better future.

How You Can Get Involved

  • Donate: A financial contribution goes toward helping individuals and families in need. This year GivingTuesday is December 3rd. You can help give someone a hand-up.
  • Volunteer: Join our team of Vincentian volunteers who conduct the home visits and provide support.
  • Spread the Word: Share this message on social media and encourage others to get involved with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Long Island.
  • Create a Fundraiser: Rally your friends and family by creating a personal or organizational fundraiser to benefit SVDPLI.
