Sixth Week of Easter
‘No One Will Take Your Joy’
Jesus said to his disciples: “…you will grieve, but your grief will become joy. …and no one will take your joy away from you.”
John 16:20, 22

At the Last Supper, Jesus was preparing his disciples for his great suffering and death that were about to happen. He compares their coming grief to the anguish of a woman in labor because her hour has arrived. After her baby is born, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy for its birth.

I have not forgotten, nor have I talked to mothers who have forgotten the pain. But that memory does not cause anguish or overshadow the outcome. Nor could the disciples forget the agony of Jesus’ crucifixion and death on the Cross. Nor could we. For the memory of Christ’s necessary suffering can never reduce the joy of Easter: He is risen from the dead!

After Easter, recently, a woman near me in a grocery store was asked, “How are you today?” She replied by saying: “Joyful! The Lord is risen!” Someone nearby responded: “Alleluia!”

Sexta Semana de Pascua
“Nadie les quitará su alegría”
Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “…se entristecerán, pero su tristeza se convertirá en alegría… y nadie les quitará su alegría.”
Juan 16:20, 22
En la Última Cena, Jesús preparaba a sus discípulos para el gran sufrimiento y la muerte que estaban a punto de suceder. Compara su dolor inminente con la angustia de una mujer que está de parto porque ha llegado su hora. Tras el nacimiento de su bebé, ya no recuerda el dolor por la alegría que siente por el nacimiento.

No he olvidado, ni he hablado con madres que hayan olvidado el dolor. Pero ese recuerdo no causa angustia ni eclipsa el resultado. Los discípulos tampoco pudieron olvidar la agonía de la crucifixión y muerte de Jesús en la cruz. Nosotros tampoco. Porque el recuerdo del sufrimiento necesario de Cristo nunca puede reducir la alegría de la Pascua: ¡Él ha resucitado de entre los muertos!

Hace poco, después de Pascua, le preguntaron a una mujer que estaba cerca de mí en un supermercado: “¿Cómo estás hoy?”. Ella respondió: “¡Qué alegría! ¡El Señor ha resucitado!”. Alguien cercano respondió: “¡Aleluya!”.
